Chemistry prof keeps Christmas Cheery for the 47th time

It’s always fun to watch a show that discusses safety precautions and fire extinguishers before a lecture begins. So it is, once again, for University of Wisconsin-Madison chemistry professor Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, leading his 47th annual “Once Upon a Christmas Cheery In the Lab of Shakhashiri” in 2016.

As Wisconsin Public Television prepares to celebrate 100 years of public broadcasting in Wisconsin in 2017, the lecture, which airs multiple times over the next few days (as well as online), is a perfect example of local, educational programming that has enhanced the station’s reputation for outreach and engagement.

Chemistry professor Bassam Shakhashiri ignites a gas-filled balloon during a free demonstration about the science of fireworks held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Union Terrace on June 28, 2009. The outreach event, led by Shakhashiri and others from the Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy, explored the chemistry used to create the colors, shapes, light and explosive heat that combine to create fantastic firework displays such as the city's Rhythm and Booms that occurred later in the evening. ©UW-Madison University Communications 608/262-0067 Photo by: Jeff Miller Date: 06/09 File#: NIKON D3 digital frame 2008

Remember When? Sesame Street and A Muppet Family Christmas

There are a lot of classic TV Christmas specials. But as a Muppets fan who grew up in the 1980s, there was no television event that better defined most of my childhood than 1987’s A Muppet Family Christmas. In the course of just one hour, all of my favorite Muppets converged on Fozzie Bear’s mother’s farm house for a traditional holiday get-together. They watched home movies of them as Muppet Babies. Kermit and his nephew explored a cave in the basement and met the Fraggles. Just about everyone slipped and fell on an icy patch at the front door – a classic slapstick running joke that never got old.

Then, the ultimate convergence of Muppetry occurred – carolers were heard outside and who could it be? The entire cast of Sesame Street! As Big Bird, Oscar, The Count, the Two-Headed Monster and just about every other resident of Sesame Street mingled and partied with Animal, Gonzo and the Swedish Chef, my then 8-year-old mind was blown!

Here is the video from that great moment in Muppets and Sesame Street history, including Ernie and Bert’s introduction to Doc from Fraggle Rock. “Hey, what is this?,” Doc asks the orange and yellow buddies as they tell him Doc starts with “D” and “Yes” starts with “Y.” “Where we come from, this is small talk.” Happy holidays!

Make Fall Sweeter

Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle (Photo Courtesy: Taste of Home)

It feels like fall arrived a little early this year. This week’s cooler temperatures and crisper air reminded me that fall is officially just around the corner. For many, the season is an occasion to bring out boots, scarves and of course, pumpkin spice.

Pumpkin spice seems to divide the masses. Whether you’re for it or against it, you’re bound to encounter it in candles, lattes and even yogurt. I identify as pro-pumpkin, in moderation at least. My stance led me to the wonderful world of online recipes, where I found my new favorite holiday dessert: Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle.

Trifles of various varieties always remind me of family gatherings. I remember my grandmother delicately layering kiwis, strawberries, pudding and angel food cake to create a colorful dessert that was as much of an artistic creation as a delicious after-dinner treat. This sentimental attachment to trifle meant that I immediately gravitated toward this trifle that incorporated spiced pumpkin, and I was glad a gave it a try.

Here’s the recipe I use for most Thanksgiving get-togethers, courtesy of Taste of Home. Instead of the homemade whipped cream, I usually use frozen whipped topping. The dessert is delicious, and seems to combine all of the best fall flavors.

If you’re pro-pumpkin like me, PBS Food has a whole collection of recipes just for you! Check them out here.

Stay Classy, North Dakota: Ron Burgundy is Here

If your Thanksgiving holiday travel took you to North Dakota – specifically the Bismarck or Minot area – then you likely found a surprising treat when you tuned into the local CBS affiliate’s Saturday evening newscast. There was legendary newsman Ron Burgundy sitting at the anchor desk, ready to read all the local news – including exciting reports on Black Friday shopping and downtown holiday decorations – with the usual cast of anchors, sports reporters and meteorologists. If your travel plans didn’t include the northern plains, our colleagues at PBS NewsHour have the full 30-minute newscast streaming for you to watch on their Rundown Blog.

Sure, Will Ferrell’s unannounced appearance at the KXNews desk is an obvious marketing maneuver for his new film, Anchorman 2, which will be released at Christmas. But, with no explanation and a full half-hour of Ferrell playing Burgundy straight in his role as a seasoned anchor, this might just be my favorite viral ploy yet.

It’s also not the first time that Ferrell has taken to local media to drum up excitement. Just a couple years ago he agreed to make a series of TV advertisements for Old Milwaukee, with one caveat – the ads could only run in the local TV markets where he filmed them. The result was a collection of hilariously eclectic ads that started appearing on YouTube from viewers who were caught off guard by the SNL actor in their city – like this spot with Ferrell bicycling and singing the beer’s jingle in the streets of Milwaukee.

So, with Ferrell, err Ron Burgundy, on the loose and making unexpected visits to American newsrooms, perhaps Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff better watch their spot on the NewsHour anchor desk with this hot talent on the market. Maybe WPT should make a pitch to ask Ferrell to join Frederica Freyberg for Friday night’s Here and Now. We’ll head up to the studio right now and make room for him on the set!

An Intrepid News Frog From Thanksgiving's Past

We’ve heard that high winds on the East Coast might ground the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.

To offset the potential disappointment of the parade foregoing its big flying wonders, we went and found this vintage photo of the always intrepid Sesame Street News Frog Kermit reporting on his own balloon in 1977 to wish all of our Wisconsin Public Television viewers and fans a Happy Thanksgiving!

We are thankful for your support all year long! Have a great holiday!
